Here are some tips to prolong the life of your jewellery.
Gold Plated
Gold Plated Jewellery Platinum, Silver, and both 14k and 18k gold are not indestructible. Plated jewellery finishes are even more fragile because of the tiny layer of gold over the base metal.
- Do not spray on perfume or other sprays while wearing your gold plated jewellery. Wear your jewellery after you have sprayed on your favourite perfume so that chemicals on the spray or perfume does not interact with your jewellery’s metal.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel jewellery is made of a steel alloy that contains chromium. The good thing about stainless steel is that it does not corrode or rust and is pretty easy to clean. Simply follow these steps:
- Pour some warm water in a small bowl, and add some mild dishwashing soap.
- Dip a soft, lint-free cloth in the soapy water, and then gently wipe the stainless steel jewellery with the damp cloth until the piece is clean.
- When cleaning it, rub the item along its polish lines.
- Wipe the remaining soap off your jewellery using a moist cloth dipped in clean water.
- Dry the jewellery well with a clean towel, and then leave your pieces to air dry.
After your stainless steel jewellery is clean, you can use a jewellery polish or a polishing cloth to shine it.
Resin Jewellery
Proper care significantly extends how long your resin jewellery remains beautiful and safe to wear. Start by storing pieces away from direct sunlight, preferably in a cool, dry place. UV exposure accelerates aging and can cause permanent discolouration that cannot be reversed.
- Clean your resin jewellery gently using mild soap and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or scrubbing, which can scratch the surface or damage protective coatings.
After cleaning, dry pieces thoroughly with a soft cloth to prevent water spots or mineral deposits. - Remove resin jewellery before swimming, showering, or engaging in activities involving chemicals. Chlorine, saltwater, and cleaning products can degrade the resin surface or cause clouding. Similarly, avoid wearing resin pieces during high-impact activities that might cause chips or cracks.
When not wearing your jewellery, store pieces separately to prevent scratching. Soft pouches or individual compartments work well for delicate resin pieces.
Avoid storing resin jewellery with harder materials like metals or gemstones that could cause surface damage.
Apply lotions, perfumes, and cosmetics before putting on resin jewellery. These products can interact with the resin surface, potentially causing discolouration or creating a film that dulls the finish.
Allow products to dry completely before adding jewellery.
